Philippine

The Philippine Educational Theater Association or PETA was established in 1967 as a non-stock, non-profit organization composed of artist-teachers dedicated to the pursuit of theater for people’s development. Considered as one of the pioneers of contemporary Filipino Theater in the Philippines, PETA has produced more than 400 plays, mostly originals that adopt the Filipino language, outlook and spirit, tackling issues relevant to its audiences. As an educational institution, it has trained artists, young people, teachers, and ordinary people who believe in the power of theater. It has unleashed people’s creativity toward transformative action. It manages its own Theater Center, a creative hub for its members, partners, and networks.

In the 1970s and 1980s, PETA used theater as a way to combat the culture of silence during the martial law years. It spearheaded the development of a national theater movement, which is a cultural force for people’s creative action against dictatorship. In the 1990s, PETA immersed itself in the praxis of Theater for Development (TFD), which pursued people’s genuine development through theater praxis. In time with PETA’s celebration of its 50th year last year, PETA was selected as one of the recipient of Asia’s premier prize and highest honor, the Ramon Magsaysay Awards for 2017 for its “bold, collective contributions in shaping the theater arts as a force for social change, its impassioned, unwavering work in empowering communities in the Philippines, and the shining example it has set as one of the leading organizations of its kind in Asia.”

Decades of cultural work have honed PETA’s capacity and leadership in producing plays, arts festivals, conferences, performance tours, outreach workshops, networking and partnership development through working with diverse networks and partners in the Philippines and overseas. With decades of experience of implementing cultural action under dictatorship and later, amidst the struggle of the marginalized in a globalized world, PETA once again assumes its pioneering role in creating thought-provoking pieces, mobilizing artists and galvanizing the crucial role of the arts amidst these challenging times.
