Trans-Asia Sisters Theater
Taiwan
Since 1995, Trans-Asia Sisters Association has empowered new immigrant women by teaching them Chinese so that they could able to communicate with the locals. In 2009, the association founded Trans- Asia Sisters Theatre, applying elements of theatre culture and performance arts to enable new immigrant women to use their bodies, performances, voices and emotions to tell their stories. Although Taiwan has moved towards a multiracial society, spaces for multicultural performances are still suppressed by the mainstream cultural and business logic. Therefore, Trans- Asia Sisters Theater hopes to create spaces for new immigrant women to perform and to create new possibilities in multicultural Taiwan society. Trans- Asia Sisters Theatre encourages body languages, voice performances and art performances so that new immigrant women can fully voice out their thoughts. Also, to break the walls between new immigrant women and their families and the public, Trans- Asia Sisters Theatre leads their members to study their transnational life histories. Through recording their lives and their difficulties of living in Taiwan, it is hoped that new immigrants can be empowered, and their communication skills and leadership skills can be improved. Through tours and talks, it is hoped that new immigrants and Taiwanese can have more communication.
