The Makhampom Theatre Group was founded in 1980, growing out of the pro-democracy movement of the 1970s. The group developed as a community of theatre volunteers, trained in theatre performance and workshop facilitation and engaged in a program of community and touring theatre activities within Thailand and internationally. In the early 2000s, Makhampom became a Foundation, working in four program areas —— Performance, Education, Community, and International. This phase resulted in several new developments: (i) the creation of the Makhampom Art Space in rural northern Thailand as the locus for all community and hosting programs; (ii) an expanded practice in refugee and conflict areas led to a focus on conflict transformation; (iii) a national role in facilitating 40 Thai youth theatre groups; (iv) a social enterprise program, involving Study Tours and multiple international hosting program, allowing the group financial independence; and (v) the Dialogue Theatre project in response to political conflict and dictatorship.

圖片說明:

1. Makhampom has been performing contemporary likay (Thai folk opera) since the late 1990s. This is Thailand’s most popular theatre style, particularly amongst working class and rural audiences. Makhampom adapts contemporary themes and texts to the popular genre.

2. Mahajanok – Never Say Die is a neo-traditional work reflecting on the theme of struggle and perseverance amongst Makhampom’s community partners from the early 2000s. It is part of a hybrid theatre practice in Thailand combining classical and folk traditions with modern theatre forms for national and international audiences.

3. The Miracle of the Blood Throne was performed by Makhampom in 2013 to commemorate the October Event 1970s democracy movement. It combined the likay and aerial circus forms and was a transformative performance for Makhampom, as the largest audience reach as well as subject to vigilante and military threats and intimidation.

4. Makhampom’s shadow theatre project is part of a diverse performance practice. Volunteers are encouraged to explore different forms and genres, allowing Makhampom to have a diversity of performance styles to suit different audience contexts. The shadow theatre project has involved various collaborations in South East Asia and Europe.

5. The Makhampom Art Space in northern Thailand is the base for Makhampom’s international exchange program. The annual Makhampom Study Tour, theatre collaborations, the ‘Underground University’, International School hosting, and Reunions have resulted in over 5,000 international visitors, providing a source of social enterprise support for Makhampom’s independent practice.

6. The Pang Daeng Nok community are a village of stateless dara’ang refugees. Makhampom has worked with this community in Chiang Dao for 20 years in a complex engaged community program of youth theatre, peace building, minority rights, social enterprise, and cultural renewal.

7. Since working in refugee camps on the Thai-Burma border in the late 1990s, Makhampom has developed a theatre arts-based peace building practice, the Art of Peace. This has involved workshops in conflict areas in the Asia-Pacific region and long-term projects in the predominantly Muslim Malay Deep South conflict region of Thailand.
